tim, you found out the suspect has been arrested several times before. >> reporter: and specifically in 2006 he was accused of stealing a gun and having a gun being in possession of a felon. so investigators say he never shou have had that gun under the couch here last night. >> a lee -- god gained another angle, i will never forget your smile. this smiley 6-year-old's life was cut short around 8:00 last night. she found a gun similar do this one underneath erik williams couch and accidentally opened fire. >> williams was arrested for child neglect with great bodily harm and two weapons charges. >> eyewitness news went to the courthouse and read through nearly half a dozen cases that accused williams of selling drugs, reckless driving and

was for grand theft of a firearm but it was dismissed without reason. >> i think it was just a tragic accident. >> this woman is not related to williams but told me the 35-year-old suspect would never hurt a child. she said both families are devastated about the loss of this bubbly 6-year-old who used to greet her mom ever afternoon at the bus stop. >> she was cute, funny, ambitious, had a lot of emergency. -- of energy. my heart goes out to the family. >> reporter: child protective services just left the house. this is the second child killed by gun violence in the past two weeks. this morning cecil smith, the police chief, came up with a plan to combat this gun violence. we're going through that plan right now and we'll have it on eyewitness news at 6:00. reporting live in sanford in seminole county, tim barber, channel 9, eyewitness news. we are following breaking news right now happening in orlando where police are investigating a hit and run the crash that left a person injured.

the scene along the eastbound lanes of i-4 near kayly. we're working to find out how bad this person was injured. we'll update you when we find out more. covering brevard county, we're hearing the 911 call that palm bay police got minutes before an officer shot and killed a man. officers went to the home on meraposa drive yesterday when a man threatened to shoot some construction workers. melanie holt listened to that 911 call and spent the day learning more about the suspect. it appears he had a background in law enforcement. >> reporter: among the online profiles we found for the suspect in this case was one for a business that he founded. before his time here at this residence in palm bay he said he worked as a u.s. army antiterrorism officer and had a job with v.a. police >> palm bay police still haven't confirmed the name of the 38-year-old killed in a deadly confrontation but the man's girlfriend said he was dimitri corcino.

security specialist and an army veteran with extensive military and law enforcement training. for the first time we're also hearing the 911 call that brought police to the vet's residence. >> he threatened to shoot us. he says, he's been out here all morning. >> the caller told police the man next door to her home seemed to be aggravated at the construction at her property. workers were trying to stucco her house. >> he said he was going to shoot all of us. call the cops he said. call the cops, i don't care, i'll shoot them too. >> he said that? >> yep. >> the caller also said the man making the threats may have been drinking and there was something not quite right with him. corcino's girlfriend, who asked not to be identified by name, wasn't home at the time of the shooting but told eyewitness news corcino had mental health issues including schizophrenia and ptsd.

chance to save his life. >> i was robbed of this chance. >> police say her boyfriend was shot once by corporal jason mccoy after the suspect exited handgun. >> reporter: right now a clean up appears to be underway at the home that corcino shared with he checked his criminal history and found arrests for resisting, disorderly intoxication and dui. there was a 2014 aggravated battery arrest in south florida but no action was taken in that case. reporting live here in palm bay, melanie holt, end end. -- channel 9, eyewitness news. a west melbourne man is being held on no bond after he shot his daughter's boyfriend and struck her with the butt of the gun. >> felix vera faced a judge on attempted first degree murder charges following the attack yesterday morning. he told police he was in the process of evicting them when the boyfriend called him a name he shot him in the neck.

someone had to use a firearm in a family scuffle if that's what it turned out to be. >> neighbors told us police have been to the home often. he has no prior criminal record. supporters say ucf's proposal for a downtown campus could have a big impact on minority students. we told you the state university board of governors passed a less expensive version of last year's failed plan. field sutton was there for the plan. they hope a campus in the parramore neighborhood will convince more students to go to college. >> reporter: there's several factors that play into that. it's not just a question of location. they believe that getting an education downtown is going to be easier in several ways. >> in front of a table with college students one student came looking to get her degree.

for violating four opd policies including writing false reports. today the orlando police citizens review board accepted opd's finding that officer escobar violated officer when he punched, drug and kicked efis holloway. the jury found escobar not guilty of battery and perjury but he's going to arbitration now to get his job back after the chief denied his appeal. state attorney jeff ashton said he welcomes an opponent in his race for 9th judicial circuit state attorney. former state attorney general aleaa planned to run against ashton. ashton took over back in the 2012 race. today the u.s. supreme court heard oral arguments in one of the biggest abortion cases in decades. they are considering whether a texas law that regulates abortion clinics

right to obtain an abortion. the death of justice antione scalia could play a major role in the outcome. >> hundreds of people crowded near the steps of the u.s. supreme court on a cold and windy day in the capitol. supporters of abortion rights and antiabortion groups. >> protecting abortion access is about protecting fundamental liberties for all of us. >> we in the end would like to see abortion stopped. this is a great middle ground. >> this is a challenge to a texas law but more than a dozen other states also have similar legislation. the law requires hospital-like facilities and doctors with hospital privileges for an abortion and force three-quarters of the clinics to close. >> amy miller runs a texas clinic and was in lead plaintiff in the case.

we continue to stay on top of breaking news in orlando where police are investigating a hit and run crash on i-4. it's a mess out there. one lane is blocked in the eastbound lanes near kayly avenue. you can see from sky witness 9 it's been causing a back up. we're waiting for police to release more information about the victim and the search for the driver that took off. as soon as we know more we'll let you know. protesters are not wasting any time organizing ahead of donald trump's central florida rally this weekend. the republican presidential hopeful will speak at the university of central florida on saturday. he will be met with hundreds of people speaking out against him. kimberly eaton asked what ucf is doing to keep people safe. >> with a controversial

taking center stage there's no telling what kind of crowd may be here on saturday. the republican front runner has a history of drawing controversy wherever he goes. >> it's official, republican front runner donald trump is coming to ucf. >> i'm going to go after one person and that's hillary clinton. >> coming off a super tuesday take over trump is going after democratic rival hillary clinton by going after central florida voters. he will rally at the arena saturday afternoon and just 24 hours after the campaign stop was announced protests were already banding together. >> organizer and student kyra clark said she's expecting nearly 500 protests to join her. >> they want to show that they don't want trump in office and they want to protest that. >> the new york billionaire has drawn plenty of opponents with racially charged remarks on

than two weeks. christopher heath is finding out how the race is changing after super tuesday and the announcement of ben carson. that part of the story coming up in about 20 minutes. both the president and the vice president decided not to endorse central florida congressman allen grayson in his race to win marco rubio's senate seat. they announced they're going to back patrick murphy. we told you when harry reid called for grayson to drop out of the race. the university of florida is going to start selling alcohol at football and basketball games but only in certain areas. fan ins the premium seating lounge will be able to buy beer and wine. they must drink that alcohol in the lounge. time right now to look at our forecast.

>> the front is here. this is how whimpy the cold front is. >> it's pool weather. >> it is. the high clouds behind our front . it's hard to find it on our surface maps but he's here. 78 downtown from a high of 81 degrees in downtown earlier today. a bit of a wind shift out of the north behind the front. other wise we still have that westerly breeze that's still keeping the marine layer offshore. it's warm even along the beaches. 80 degrees in cocoa beach. a comfortable night will be had by all. you can see the high clouds streaming in. we'll keep it mostly fair for over night conditions for central florida. here's temperatures for us at 6:30 tonight falling from the 70s back down into the 60s. a little bit of a drier air wedge coming through. we will see temperatures get back into the

mid 50s where they were earlier this morning. orlando 57 and then back at 1:00 to 80 degrees tomorrow. it's going to push 82, maybe 83 in a few spots tomorrow. so much more a cold front. we will see a second one come by with a little bit better chance for showers. there's no cold air behind these fronts this time of the year generally speaking. without the jet stream no chance of a big cool down. we will see a nice day there's 3:00 in the afternoon. a mix of clouds and sun. showers on early friday morning but you're still going to need to keep your sprinklers on because it's not going to be much. showers move by very early on friday and then scoot out of the way giving us a nice week. daytona just about as flat as surf will get here. it looks more like the gulf of mexico. if you've been there it's like a big bathtub in the gulf. less wave action there for the atlantic.

the money is going to the wrong things. angela jacobs went through the report commissioned by the county. county officials told you they're embarrassing the constructive criticism. >> reporter: some parts of this report are not pretty but the county said it's exactly what it wanted, transparency and some direction on where to spend this money to make the biggest difference. >> orange county is spending nearly $7.7 million to combat homelessness. right now it's hard to tell if it's making a dent. >> there wasn't enough data across all of the programs to make the conclusion that they were working or not working. >> consultant barra poppy compiled the report and found 44% of spending isn't helping people. she recommends implementing better program tracking while directing more money towards permanent supportive and rapid rehousing, rather than emergency shelters. >> it was a little bit of a

channel 9 eyewitness news continues right now at 5:30. >> brand new at 5:00, it's something most of us do every day without thinking but an orange county teacher said her posts on facebook got her yanked from her classroom. >> a teacher criticized standardized testing on her pers al page and orange county schools moved her for it. but an arbitrator said she must be given her job back. julie salmone spoke with that teacher said. she said it's a win for teachers across the district. >> reporter: i spoke with her by phone and she told me that teachers should have a voice and should not be afraid of retaliation. she wants her job back here at avalon elementary school where she's taught for more than 12 years. >> on august 9th of 2014 wendy lowery a speech and language
